The Government of PNG is undertaking a major nation-wide Naturalization and Registration Project to regularize the status of estimated 10,000 West Papuan refugees
ICSA has registered 7568 West Papuans throughout PNG. It is established that a few remaining cohorts still remain unregistered. They will also be registered and provided the opportunity to apply for PNG citizenship
Around 3127 throughout the country has so far been granted PNG citizenship by naturalization since 2015
The Citizenship Advisory Committee (CAC) of PNG will be meeting soon to deliberate on the 700 pending citizenship applications
The remaining registered group are still on various processing pathways determination before their status can be regularized. A good number were identified to be PNG citizens marrying West Papuans and children born to such mix parentage that are deemed PNG citizen by decent.
About less than a 100 individuals from those tranferred in from the Christmas Island through Regional Resettlement from Australia and spontaneous arrivals still remain in PNG.
